Can I still run a previous version of FastTest?

Yes you can. For example, to launch a 2008 (17th edition) version of FastTest:

  • From your computer's desktop double click on ‘My Computer’ (or launch Windows Explorer)
  • Navigate to your ‘C:\Amtech2008\FastTest17th ‘folder
  • Double click on ‘FastTest.exe’

You can create a new shortcut as follows:

  • Launch ‘My Computer’ (or Windows Explorer)
  • Navigate to your ‘C:\Amtech2008\FastTest17th ‘folder
  • Right-click on the ‘FastTest.exe’ file
  • Select ‘Send To’ then choose ‘Desktop (create shortcut)’

The newly created desktop shortcut can be renamed (if required) by right-clicking on it and selecting ‘Rename’

Please note: the folder location of other versions of FastTest will differ from that shown above.

Cannot read the AMTECH 2009 disk

The AMTECH 2009 upgrade disk is a DVD, the installation is too large to fit onto a CD. Consequently, you will need to check whether the optical drive on your computer can read DVDs.
If you have another computer which does have a DVD drive and you also have a USB ‘pen drive’ with more than 1GB free space then you should still be able to install the 2009 upgrade by copying the DVD to the USB pen drive and installing from there. This can be done as follows:

  • Insert the AMTECH 2009 disk into the DVD drive equipped computer
  • Cancel the installation screens (if they appear)
  • Insert the USB pen drive into the same PC
  • Launch ‘My Computer’ (or ‘Windows Explorer’) and navigate to the DVD
  • Copy the contents of the DVD to the USB pen drive by selecting all the files and folders from the disk (by clicking ‘Ctrl+A) and then click choose ‘Copy’ from the Edit menu
  • Navigate to the USB pen drive and select ‘Paste’ from the Edit menu
  • Once copying has completed you can insert the USB pen drive into the computer on which you which to install the software and run the ‘Setup.exe’ file that it now contains (Click ‘Start’, then ‘Run’ then Browse to the USB pen drive to find the ‘Setup.exe’ file).

FastTest 2009 is asking for me for a username and password and I don’t know what to enter.

If a ‘Local Installation’ of FastTest 2009 was done on your PC then you will have been asked to enter a Name and Password during the installation. It is this name and password that you will need to enter.

If a ‘Network installation’ was done on your PC then a user name and password will have been defined during the server installation. You will either need to use this username and password or use a username and password that have subsequently been created by your FastTest database administrator.

Usernames and passwords can be changed within FastTest by selecting ‘Users’ from the ‘Display’ menu.

If you were not asked for a username or password during the installation and the message ‘Cannot connect to Server Please enter a valid Master Database Server’ then you may have selected the wrong FastTest database installation option. If you were intending to perform a local installation (where the database would reside on your computer) then you should do the following:

  • Run the FastTest Server set up (Start > Programs > Amtech Power Software > FastTest Server Setup) and select a ‘Server Database Setup’.

How do I install the Master FastTest database onto a server?

  • Firstly, install the FastTest database onto the server using the AMTECH 2009 DVD. You will need to use licence number 737837467, not the number on your delivery note or letter. You will be asked to enter a username and password, please remember what is entered here as it will be needed later.
  • Secondly, install the end users copy or copies of FastTest from the AMTECH 2009 DVD using the licence number on your delivery note or letter. Select ‘Network Install’ rather than ‘Local Install’, you will be prompted to select the Master FastTest database on the Server.
  • Further details can be found in the ‘Installation Guides’ folder on the AMTECH 2009 DVD.

Error when ‘Restoring previous database’

You cannot ‘Restore’ previous FastTest databases; you have to use the ‘Migration’ feature.
If you have not restored the database via the installation you have the following options:

  • To bring over an old FastTest database you will need to ensure the database is first of all unzipped so the mdb file format can be identified by 2009 as it will not accept zipped up access mdb files.
  • FT Standard Users only – you will then need to run the server set up (Start > Programs > Amtech Power Software > FastTest Server Setup) and select Server database (for standalone users) then browse to relevant database
  • All other FastTest applications - Select File - Migration within the application. You will then be able to navigate to the location of their old access database (mdb format) and successfully 'restore' their data.
